Diagnose it by the sound
Five sounds, five different problems. Work out which one yours is making and you'll know whether this is a free fix, a service call, or a drain job that has nothing to do with the disposal.
- What it means
- The motor has power and the grinding plate is jammed — usually a bone, a fruit pit, a utensil, or fibrous food wrapped around the mechanism.
- What to do
- Switch it off immediately. With power isolated at the wall and breaker, use the hex wrench to free it, then remove the debris with tongs.
- When to call
- If it won't free up, if it frees and then jams again, or if it hums again after resetting.
- What it means
- No power reaching the motor. Most often a tripped reset button on the unit, a tripped breaker, or a failed wall switch. Sometimes a burned-out motor.
- What to do
- Press the reset button on the underside of the unit, check the breaker, and try again.
- When to call
- If the reset trips again straight away, or nothing happens at all after checking both.
- What it means
- Something hard is in there — bottle caps, cutlery, small bones, broken glass. Occasionally a broken impeller lug.
- What to do
- Switch it off immediately and don't run it again. Every second with metal inside damages the grinding components.
- When to call
- Once you've isolated power. If you can see and safely retrieve the object with tongs, try — otherwise leave it.
- What it means
- The disposal is probably fine and the drain line beyond it is blocked, usually with grease and food buildup.
- What to do
- Check whether the other side of a double sink is also slow. If it is, the problem is definitely the line, not the unit.
- When to call
- This is a drain clearing job rather than a disposal repair — worth saying so when you book.
- What it means
- Loose mounting hardware, or an internal imbalance from damage.
- When to call
- Soon. It stresses the drain connections it's attached to, which turns one problem into two.

The two free fixes
We'd rather you tried these than paid us to.
On the underside of nearly every unit, usually red or black. Switch off at the wall, press it firmly until it clicks, then try again. A meaningful share of completely dead disposals need nothing more than this.
Most disposals have a hex socket in the centre of the base, and most ship with a small wrench for it. With power off at the wall and the breaker, insert the wrench and work it back and forth to rotate the plate and break the jam free. Then clear the debris with tongs, restore power, and press reset.
The silent fault
Leaks make no sound — location decides everything
A leaking disposal is the one fault the noise won't tell you about, and where it's leaking from determines whether it's a small repair or a new unit.
If you find water in the cabinet: dry everything, run the unit briefly, and note where the water reappears. That single observation tells us most of what we need.

Root causes
What actually kills disposals
- Hard objects. Bones, fruit pits, and the things that fall in by accident — cutlery, bottle caps, glass. The leading cause of jams and impeller damage.
- Fibrous foods. Celery, corn husks, artichokes, onion skins. The strands wrap around the mechanism instead of being cut by it.
- Starchy foods. Potato peels, rice, pasta. They form a paste that clogs the chamber and the line beyond. A little is fine; a bowlful isn't.
- Grease. Doesn't hurt the unit directly — it coats the discharge pipe and creates the slow-drain problem that gets blamed on the disposal.
- Coffee grounds. Pass through fine, then settle as sediment in the trap and drain line.
- Overloading. Feeding too much at once, or faster than it can clear, overheats the motor and trips the reset.
- Running it dry. Water carries ground material out of the chamber. Without enough of it, residue stays in the unit and the pipe.
- Age and corrosion. Units generally last somewhere around eight to fifteen years. Shells corrode from the inside, and once perforated, the unit is finished.
- Poor installation. Loose mounting, improper drain connections, and knockout plugs left in place produce faults that look like unit failure but aren't.

Getting more from it
Habits that extend its life
- Cold water, not hot. Cold keeps fats solid so they grind up and flush through. Hot water melts them into a liquid that re-solidifies further down the pipe.
- Keep the water running afterward. Ten to twenty seconds after the grinding stops clears the chamber and pushes material through the line.
- Feed it gradually. Small amounts with water running, rather than filling the chamber and switching on.
- Keep the problem foods out. Fibrous vegetables, large quantities of starch, bones, pits, and grease belong in the bin.
- Clean it properly. Ice cubes scour the chamber. Scrub the underside of the splash guard — that's where odours live and where nothing else reaches.
- Run it regularly. Units left idle for long periods can seize and corrode.
- Don't ignore repeated resets. That's the unit warning you before it fails.
